THE DORDOGNE
At the time of Gabares (flat bottom barges), the Dordogne, the river that crosses our region, was a "merchant" river, ie. it was navigable, for a very short time, from late Spring to early Autumn.
For a long time, the Dordogne was the main communication route. The gabares carried not only sawn wood to the Bordeaux vineyards, but also other local productions, walnuts, raw skins and leather, a little iron and a lot of coal.
